September is Louisville’s loudest month.
This year, the Highland Festival Grounds at the Kentucky Exposition Center hosts two of the biggest festivals in the country on back-to-back weekends. Louder Than Life runs September 17–20. Bourbon & Beyond follows immediately after on September 24–27.
That’s eight days of music, bourbon, and food across two weekends — and tens of thousands of people all trying to reach the same address at the same time.
Here’s the thing nobody tells you until you’re sitting in it: the festival is the easy part. Getting there and getting home is where the day goes sideways.
The parking math doesn’t work
The Kentucky Expo Center has a lot of parking. It does not have enough parking for a headliner-night crowd all arriving in the same ninety-minute window.
What that looks like in practice:
- Arrival: you’re in a queue on Phillips Lane long before you’re anywhere near a space.
- Exit: everyone leaves at once when the headliner’s last note fades. Expect to sit in your car for a long while before you move.
- Rideshare surge: the exact moment tens of thousands of people want a ride is the exact moment surge pricing peaks and driver availability craters.
And if bourbon is part of your festival plan — and at Bourbon & Beyond, it very much is — driving yourself was never really an option to begin with.
What actually works: book a private ride in advance
The group that has the best day is almost always the group that sorted out transportation weeks earlier.
